Some possibilities:
If you are willing to spend some money, the Nikon 16-85mm AF-S VR is a great choice. It is sharp, well built, has low distortion and chromatic aberration, and you will rarely need to change it. It will serve you well when you upgrade to some new 16 MP body. The 18-105mm AF-S VR is sharp, but it has more chromatic aberration, and your old D70 won't compensate the way the newer bodies do.
An economical lens is the 50mm f1.8 AF-D. It is not very sharp wide open, but between f4.5 and f11 it is very sharp. It has hardly any distortion or chromatic aberration. The angle of view is a bit narrow for general use. It can be a very good portrait lens. It will not autofocus with a D5100.It will autofocus with your D70 or with a D7000.It has a distance scale, but my sample is a little inaccurate, and it can focus past infinity.
The 28mm f2.8 AF-D is a frequently overlooked lens worth considering. It is not terribly expensive, but it does cost more than the 50mm. It is a slightly wide angle lens. Sharpness at f3.2 is very good. It has some chromatic aberration at smaller apertures. The distance scale is pretty accurate, and it can dial to infinity accurately. That can make it a great low-light lens, and for dialing in good depth of field. That made it my choice for these shots:

The first two were taken with a D60. The third was taken with a D90. The second one shows some red fringing.

The expensive 18-200mm AF-S VR is tempting. It is well built and versatile. The sharpness is good but not the greatest, but at 6MP it will look fine. It could be a disappointment if you upgrade to a new higher resolution body. It sometimes has some purple fringing that the newer bodies' processors can control, but the D70's will not.
