Nikon D3X or better to wait for the Canon 1Ds mk4?

Nikon D3X is 24.5 megapixel
Canon 1Ds mk4 will be what? 32 megapixel? And maybe not much more money?

LOL.
I guess you have not noticed that the 1Ds, Mark IV is in competition with the Nikon D4 when it is eventually released NOT the D3X. And that you are still stuck on the old marketing gambit of selling pixel counts instead of quality.
On pixels

Here is how present dSLR's sensors compare. Until tests are actually done on specific sensors, probably pixel counts is NOT the way to make choices

Just as a practical view. Look how the Nikon D3s 12 mp sensor compares to the Canon 1Ds, Mark III (21 mp)

I guess the main question is if you don't already have a camera system, what do you expect from buying the "best" Nikon or Canon Camera with no stated experience using a fully adjustable camera?

IMHO, if you are aiming for these cameras, you should have already complete fleet of lenses for a Canon or Nikon system.
What I mean is that, it is no longer a question whether you buy the Canon or the Nikon.

At the end of the day you will choose the one that's advertising seduces you the most convincingly, you will spend too much on it, your life will not change, you will be no happier, the camera will not fulfil your expectations and when you see the next generation of models the manipulation process will start all over again.
And again.
And again.
Think very carefully, are you really that gullible?

If you believe that megapixels matter, then you have no business getting either of these cameras.
Get a nice entry level DSLR or a prosumer grade one first, and learn something about photography.
What you're asking is like someone who doesn't even have a driver's license asking if he should buy a Bugatti or Maserati as his first car.

If you're asking this type of question, you really should think twice. You may end up buying an expensive white elephant, if you can't use it.
Personally I'd save the difference between a D3X and a 1Ds mark TWO! And spend that money on proper glass. The difference between is negligible in resolution, and the lens will get you far further.
Alternatively consider a second hand Hasselblad 500C/M, with a CFV-39 back, gonna absolutely kill any Canon or Nikon.
- Is Canon going to replace 1Ds Mark III this year?
- Should I wait for Canon 7d mark iii or can I buy Canon 7d mark ii or Nikon D500?
- Is the Nikon D3x smaller than the Nikon D3s?
- Should I wait for Nikon D3200 release officially or buy the Canon 550D?
- Where can I sell my Nikon D3X without being scammed?
