Lenses for Nikon D3S?

My husband just got a Nikon D3S camera. I wanted to get him a new lens for it, but I have no clue what anything means when purchasing a lens.

He does nature photography, plays around with HDR, and likes to do close-up photos.

What kinds of lenses do you recommend? (I know he wants to keep in the sae Nikon family, so I'd prefer Nikkor lenses.)

I appreciate your input!

You need to speak to your husband.

You should think about getting the Nikon 18-200 lens. I used to have it when I used nikon and it was great for close up nature photography, great zoom too.

Also look into the Macro lenses. Those are for ultra close-ups. In school I use a macro lens for nature and bugs and such.

Another lens category you guys might like is a wide-angle lens. It expands the photo that you are taking and the outcome is great!

With the D3S, your husband will likely want to stick with prime lenses or zoom lenses that have large fixed maximum apertures. Nikon makes quite a few lenses like that. A few examples of would be the AF NIKKOR 24mm f/2.8D and the AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.4G for prime lenses, or the AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED and the AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II in the zoom category. Depending on how close up he likes to get to his subjects, he might enjoy one of the Micro NIKKOR macro lenses.

However, with absolutely no ideas what lenses your husband already has in his kit, it's really impossible to suggest a particular one for him. I agree with Fishmeister: you should talk to your husband to find out what he'd like to have. If you don't want to ruin the surprise by asking him about his lenses and dropping hints that you might be planning to purchase one, you could always bring him to a camera store (not an electronics store like Best Buy), tell him what you're willing to spend on a lens or other equipment, and let him choose for himself.

Plays around with hdr… And that with a D3s, the finest camera nikon has ever made…
A 50mm f1.4 is just about the cheapest lens I'd use on one of those.
