My husband just got a Nikon D3S camera. I wanted to get him a new lens for it, but I have no clue what anything means when purchasing a lens.

He does nature photography, plays around with HDR, and likes to do close-up photos.

What kinds of lenses do you recommend? (I know he wants to keep in the sae Nikon family, so I'd prefer Nikkor lenses.)

I appreciate your input!

Added (1). (It will be a surprise gift for him. So I can't ask him what he wants.)

Any Nikkor AF, AF-I or AF-S lens that is either designed for FX (full frame) Nikon dSLR'r or 35 mm Nikon cameras will work just find in the auto mode.

Since he is very interested in shooting HDR images and they require a more disciplined approach, any older Nikkor AI manual lens will work as well

Closeups in nature usually calls for a nice macro lens. The AF-S 60 mm f/2.8 or AF-S 105 mm f.2.8 lenses are both macro lenses

In the area of landscape lenses, look into the Nikkor AF-S 14 mm or AF-S 14-24 mm wide angle zoom lens

The listed lenses are all FX, so will work just fine on his new D3s

Keep the receipt just in case you guess wrong. He can then return it for an exchange without any hassles.

He'd fall in love with a 70-200mm 2.8 af- s vrii. Super for birding.

Unless he has one already.
