I traded my Nikon D3000 for a Nikon D40X?

Ok I wanted a camera that had a little bit more options and my friend wanted one that was easier to use since he already as a D300 and D90… So the body of the camera Says Nikon D40 but he said he had the camera rebuilt to be a D40X? Is that possible or did I get ripped off?

You've been ripped off, unless your friend had a friend who's a Nikon engineer.

The D40 is a 6.1 mp camera and the D40x is a 10.0 mp camera. To rebuild the first into the second requires tearing down the camera and exchanging the digital sensor, among other things.

It's not like changing tires, it's more like open-heart surgery.

Simple test.take some photos at L (largest size) and at High (quality setting). Examine the photos on your computer.

Quote: "D40x images are 3, 872 pixels wide versus 3, 008 pixels wide in the D40."

Even if your "friend" did manage to modify a D40 into a D40x (don't bet on it), you've now DOWNGRADED from a new camera with more modern controls and software to one that's from 2006.

IF the photo test doesn't reveal a 10.0 megapixal image, then ask for the swap back. By the way, the D3000 has more options and controls than the D40 or D40x.
