Is it worth upgrading from a Nikon D40X to a Nikon D3000?

I have an oldish D40X that needs a good (professional) cleaning and I was thinking of having it cleaned and gifting it to a friend's daughter who is wanting her first DSLR. I also have an opportunity to pick up a used D3000 body that will be probably about $150 more than getting the D40X professionally serviced.

Is it worth the extra money to spring for the D3000, or should I stick with having the D40X cleaned? It doesn't seem like the D3000 offers too many additional features. If the D3000 is worth it, and gives more room to grow, I'm willing to go that route. Just wanting to know if it's enough of an upgrade to be worth the extra cost.

Also, keep in mind, the camera is going to a 16 year old who up until now has only worked with point and shoots.

Added (1). This isn't for me at all. I'm going to give one of those two cameras to a teenager, for her first DSLR. I have no idea what her photography skills are (although I know she has taken some nice shots with her point and shoot), or what would best fit her. She wants a DSLR to play with and will probably look into some classes once she has one. I just want to give her some room to grow along with her first "real" camera. I'm wondering if there's enough "extra" in the D3000 to make it worth the extra cost.

Only you can answer that question about "worth". You know your skill level, you know what you plan to do with the camera and you know whether or not you'll be able to properly use your skills with a different camera… No one else can tell you that.

Best of luck. Gifting is a nice idea but do you really need a new body? Or are you just wanting something different. In either case weight the percentages. How will a new body serve you better than the one you have? If all your answers are positive then have fun.

The D3000 adds a little to the D40X, but not a lot. The money might be better applied to either going higher with a D5100, or towards adding a good tripod.

If that D3000 is new, I'd go for that. How much use has the D40 seen? If it needs professional cleaning that might be another reason to go for the D3000.
Both are cameras one can grow with.

The D3000 was a MAJOR blunder by Nikon. Intended as an "upgrade" to the D40/D40x, the D3000 was introduced at a time when competing models from Sony and Canon featured live view and video capability - which the D3000 lacked. It was quickly discontinued and replaced by the D3100 with live view and video capability. The D3200 has since replaced the D3100.

A real upgrade would be the Nikon D7000 but it might not be within your budget. The D5100 has some of the features of the D7000 so it might be worth considering. A D3100 in good condition would be a far better choice than the D3000.
