How to get my pictures to look more artsy?

I currently have a Nikon D300 with a standard DX 18-55mm Nikkor lens and standard flash.
i'm having trouble making them look high-def.

and i would like it to look like this:

a little hard to tell, but concept is given.
please let me know if there are any suggestions i should do.
