Do you know which camera/video recorder I'm in need of?

Need a camera with:
1080mp (?) HD video recording
16mp or more (14mp at the least)
Price range of $100-$1000

Thought about the Nikon D5100 & Nikon D700. Not sure if its exactly what I'm looking for.

It depends what you plan to use it for.

Video is measured using horizontal line count. 1080 is high definition. The "p" means the video images are captured progressively as opposed to being interlaced. 99.999% of the wold population can't tell the difference. In this case, the high definition video is 1920x1080 = 2, 073, 600 or about 2 megapixels.

mp or "megapixel" count is used to determine still image resolution.

If you want to capture stills, then get a dSLR. They are designed to capture still images and do a great job at that. Capturing video is a "convenience feature". Typically, they don't do a very good job handling audio and there are know issues related to overheating and file size limitations.

If you want to capture video (and audio) then get a dSLR. They are designed to capture video + audio and do a great job at that. Capturing still images is a "convenience feature". Typically, they don't do a very good job at that.

If you buy something to use its secondary feature, then you are compromising, so expect problems. If you buy something for its primary feature, then it had better work well - and you don't have to be disappointed when the secondary feature is not quite where you wanted it to be.

This does not mean dSLR video is poor - when used properly, under good lighting conditions, for short capture sequences, the video is quite good. But it takes way more work learning the capabilities and proper use for successful video capture. With a camcorder, you point, capture long sequences and there's no overheating concern.
