Can you use vivitar series 1 with nikon d300?

I bought a nikon d300 the man at the store told me to buy a vivitar series 1 but when i got home to use it. It did not fit on the camera. The man told me to buy a bigger adapter for it, but i'm not really sure what i'm supposed to get. Can anyone help me please!

The man is either a fool or has NO clue about Nikon systems at all.

While the Vivitar Series 1 lenses were some excellent lenses twenty years ago, you need to use Nikkor AF, AF-I and AF-S lenses to get the most performance from your fine camera

A Vivitar lens of that era would be a manual focus lens IF it was AI compliant. If not, your D300's light meter would not work with that lens
