Using Nikon d300s, using the elinchrom ranger flash units and ring flash. If you can what is top sync speed that can be used. Most are at 250 second how far can you push flash units.

Your sync speed has to do with your camera's shutter. If the D300s has a sync of 250 then whatever flash you use will have a sync speed of 250. Unless the flash unit has a fast pulse mode. Read the manual for that. If you need to shoot in sun there are ways around darkening the background and balancing the flash. You can push the flash unit as far as the knob turns. 1/1 power or however low it goes. There are a few, but most flash units don't let you chose the flash duration. It's just built to be 1/1200 or whatever the case may be.

Out of the box studio flashes will only sync at the top rated sync speed of your camera (although some can't quite always reach this speed). Although I don't know of anyone who has tested this, you may be able to get to HyperSync speeds with an Elinchrom Ringflash using PocketWizards Flex system and, if it's a Ranger Quadra you're talking about a special cable PocketWizard makes for their Flex system and the Quadra. For example, with an "A" head it's possible to get to 1/500th sync speed. If using an "S" head it is possible to get a 1/2, 000th sync speed. Both of these speeds are also camera dependent. For more info try Googleing Tom Bol's blog on HyperSync with Rangers.
