It seems that you have not done ANY independent research.

You first need to visit the Nikon and Canon websites and make a note of all the cameras that fall within your budget. Do not neglect the Pentax website in your first search

After you have picked out two or three of each brand, visit DP Review and read the professional reviews of those cameras.

By the time you have done all that, you should have narrowed your choices down two or three contenders.

Visit the DXOmark.com website and see which of your contenders sensors performs the best.

Once you have done that, you will know which is best for YOU, not us

What style of camera?
Point & shoot, I feel Canon is better than Nikon. However, I would go with a Pansonic Lumix.
DSLR, both are good and you should also look at Pentax. If you have friends with DSLR cameras, choose the brand they are using so you can borrow lenses and accessories.

Canon. I'm a Canon guy, so yes, this is biased, but I have tried Nikon as well before purchasing. I immediately leaned towards the Canon. Both brands have something attractable/pros, but none make on really stand out above one another. First off, Canon is much easier to use. There are more buttons for shortcuts, and the interface is easy to follow/navigate. With Nikon, in Best Buy, I could barely figure out how to adjust the ISO. (And I'm strong with technology)

Also, keep this in mind. Many cameras used in major motion pictures or TV shows are Canon-Nikon only makes photo cameras. One movie I can think of which used Canon cameras is Iron Man 3.

Finally, Canon DSLRs have some lenses which are STM, meaning that they are smooth and silent while focusing. You won't find this on ANY other brand, and I find that enough in itself to go with Canon.

I wish you the best of luck in finding a camera and on your photography endeavors! Let me know if you need any more help!

If you have not used either camera before it simply does not matter.

You will get used to either camera, both are capable of generating great pictures (if you know how)…

Check out pricing, maybe special offers, lenses and pick your path.

Canon uses a plastic lens, Maybe Nikon use diamonds instead of glass for their lenses. You should buy Nikon.

For DSLRs, Pentax.

For video, Sony.

For bridge cameras, Fujifilm (just make sure you get a model with a viewfinder).

For EVIL, Sony, Olympus, or Panasonic.

For cheap compacts, just avoid Kodak, BenQ, Vivitar and GE - you'll pay more money for less camera with either.

Of course, both just LOVE people too thick to spell CAMERA.
