The SB-600 is smaller and works almost just as well. If you don't need the ability to control your flash wirelessly, then the SB-400 is even smaller and I personally believe it makes the most sense on a D40

Yes but its a lot of money for bells & whistles you'll probably never use.

Why not consider the SB600 or the SB700 if you want Nikon flash.

Or go for cheaper TTL flashes, like the Nissin or Yongnuo range. Spending out £300+ for a flash is just silly.
