Why can't the RAW photos from my Nikon 3100 be opened in Photoshop

I can only view the photos in the software that came with the camera (ViewNX 2). When I try to open them in photoshop CS3 it says "could not complete request because this is not the right kind of document". I never had this issue with the Raw files from my Nikon D70?

I would recommend to upgrade Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) from Adobe.com

Check for updates on your program. It does not have the proper add on to convert Nikon 3100 raw to a usable format. The drivers are not downward compatible, which means you would have no problem with CS5.

Your stuck with using the camera software with your RAW files and then converting them into jpg so you can edit them in photoshop.

You might want to try downloading the new Corel Paint Shop Pro for a month long trial. An see if it stacks up to CS5 in your mind. A lot less pricer than CS5 or the upgrade cost.

Hi, CR2 (RAW) files change with each new incarnation of the camera sensor.

Unless you want to upgrade to CS4 or 5 you will simply need to go to Adobe and get the free conversion program to change CR2 to DNG files.

Once you convert you can open them in Adobe Camera RAW with photoshop CS3.
