Why can't I get the Nikon 50mm 1.4 af-s to zoom?

I just bought a Nikon 50mm f/1.4 af-s to take low-light photography with my Nikon D40.It has a focus ring where there would normally be a manual zoom ring on other lenses like the 55-200 and the 18-55. How do I get it to zoom?

It's not a zoom lens.

It's not the zoom lens.

You use your legs to "zoom" (i.e. You walk closer to the subject to zoom in and you walk away from the subject to zoom out.)

That lens can give your shot like this

If it were a zoom lens it would say xxxmm-xxxmm

the lens you have in a prime lens, meaning fixed. You can only take pictures with a 50mm focal length, this is how they achieve such a large aperture.

Maybe this is why you do your research before buying any lens, or anything in general. Like everyone else explained, the 50mm f/1.4 is not a zoom lens, but a prime or fixed-focal lens. If you don't like the fact it can't zoom, I suggest you try to return it and get a refund as soon as possible before it's too late.

Even better, send it to people like me who have actually have a use for such a lens but are limited in funds. I've been looking to replace my Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 AIS for quite some time now.

Oh my God… Only zoom lenses can zoom… And that's not a zoom lens.

Sounds like it's time for you to take a photography class.
