Whitch is better then nikon d3100 of d5000?

I'm getting a camera for christmas and i was sure that i wanted the d5000 now they came out with the d3100. Whitch has better quality pictures and is the 3100 smaller? Dos it have less options? Someone please tell me about it and whitch one to get!

If you go out to the Nikon website, you can compare the two side by side.

What you will see, is the D3100 has all the features of the D5000, plus the ability to shoot Full HD video and autofocus in the video mode. Something that very few cameras can do at this point.

What the D5000 does have that the D3100 does not is the articulated LCD, which is a big deal for those who shoot a lot of macro shots (like field scientists) or like to get into unusual shooting positions.

The choice of course is yours, but if I were spending the money, I would buy the D3100 or wait until the D7000 became available in mid-October

I would expect that the d3100 is better. But the price might suggest that it doesn't take the best of pics. But the d3100 probably takes better pics plus it has a lot more features. The d3100 is lighter too. Is 505 grams while the d5000 is 580 grams. No the d3100 doesn't have less options.
