WHich SLR camera should i choose?

I've had past experience with p&s cameras and i was also the director for a commercial filming industry, so i know about video cameras and what makes a good shot but i'm now looking to purchase my first SLR as i want to take up the hobby. I have no bias towards Nikon or Canon.

Looking at canon 600D vs. Nikon 5100
or canon d7 vs. Nikon d7000

I know that there different classes but i would like to know what your opinion would be. I'm looking to shoot general family and travel photos, maybe some light videoing as well, but that's not my main objective.

I think if money is no object ( and you would keep this for a few years) is to go with a higher end camera to allow you to grow with it. In saying that (and I know a bit about Canon cameras) I would suggest you look at the EOS7D and the EOS5D mark 2.

If you want low light performance I'd go with Nikon. However, if you want video and size, I'd go with Canon. Remember, it's the lenses that make a photo.

But I'd personally choose the Nikon d7000 because I do shoot action in low light conditions and the MP (which is not really important in many cases) is enough to get large, working prints.

The most bang for the buck would be the Nikon D5100.

Here is how the sensors of the best of those three compare

As you can see, both Nikon's sensors out perform the Canon. In addition, the under $1, 000 D5100's sensor performs almost as well as the D7000

Disregarding money, I think the d7000 would be the best choice. If you are looking to save, then either the 5100 or the nikon d3100 would be the way to go. I have not had any experience with SLR canons so i really can't say anything about them.

600D and D5100 are extremely similar, got an articulating screen, video, 16 and 18MP sensor and both are around 4fps. Quality is the same, so just go with one.

7D and D7000 - the D7000 is aimed at a little bit "lower" photographers, hence the lower price. 7D actually competes with the D300s, but I personally think it's better than both. I've been using it for a long time and it is brilliant.

For family and travel, you don't need the 7D. Something like D7000 or T3i/600D would be more than enough. What is light videoing? All of these cams got great video recording, so no worries.
