I'm not sure if this link is gonna work; but it's a comparison of the specs of those two cameras:

if it doesn't work; just go here
http://www.dpreview.com/...byside.asp and choose Nikon D3100 and Canon EOS 1000D (Rebel XS's other name)

I'd go with the Nikon D3100 cause it's newer, has a wider range of ISO, and full 1080 full frame 24fps video recording with auto focus.

Other suggestions: Pentax Kr

I'm a Canon guy.
The Nikon D3100 is probably the best entry level DSLR or on par with the Canon T2i.
Canon T2i - $700 w/ 18-55mm
Nikon D3100 - $620 w/ 18-55mm.
These are prices from amazon.
So I suggest you go to a local Best Buy and try them out yourself and choose which feels best for you.
But if you decide you ONLY want from a XS and a D3100. Then I suggest you get a D3100.

Hand down the Canon, they cost a bit more but Canon has a wider selection of lens and the L series are some of the best around. Buy an XTI to get HD video capability and you will never be sorry.

I have mainly Canons; a 5D MK2 and an A1
I also use a medium format Yashica D

I too was considering a T2i but after much much reading and looking for what my next camera was going to be I have decided 100% on the Nikon D7000. The reviews of it are awesome and it has many of the things I was looking for in settings and it also has 2 card slots in it and takes 1080 HD movies. It was a little more then I wanted to spend right now but I'm thinking better in the long run. Instead of getting the cheaper ones which are still good don't get me wrong but I know I would have thought why didn't I get the best one I could afford.
