I know nothing about you and your abilities or your photo style, but personally, I would buy the D70 or a newer version (D70s) of a similar camera.

The Fuji is a 12MP camera, but the sensor is about 6% the size of the D70's sensor. To put it another way, the D70 sensor is 17 times larger than the Fuji's sensor. Even though the D70 is only a 6MP camera, you might find the image quality on the D70 to be better.

Having said that…

If you are more of a snapshooter and if you don't want to mess with a heavier camera and lens, the Fuji has a really tremendous zoom range. You will not have to buy anything else to make this camera work. It can show an entire mountain or you can zoom into to see if there's a bear on top of the mountain waving at you. You would have to buy a few different lenses for the D70 to have that range. To be comparable to the Fuji, you would need at least 2 VR lenses, such as the 18-200 VR and 70-300 VR. This would cost you over $1, 000 for the lenses, although you can find used copies of each lens. Even those two would not give you the reach of the Fuji.

If you buy a D70, frankly, it may be near the end of its life. That camera is 6 or 7 years old. The good news is that lenses can last forever, so any lens you buy will still work when you either outgrow the D70 or just decide it's time to move up to a newer body. When the Fuji breaks, unless it's under warranty, you will probably just toss it and buy something new.

If spending ten times the money on a camera that will let you really grow as a photographer doesn't bother you, I'd get the D70 or D70s (a better choice). If you don't want to mess with a larger, heavier camera and an assortment of lenses, buy the Fuji.
