Go for a D90 thats the best since you have been using a D50 you'll love it buying a D60 would be stupid since it has the same features as D50, D90 will come with a huge lens so i think you'll be upgrading to almost proffesional equipment but you know what NIKON quality SUCKS! I'd rather say go for any cheap or expensive CANON camera see the difference you'll love canon but if you wsnt to stick to NIKON THEN I HAVE MENTIONED CAMERAS ABOVE!

If you know exactly what you miss on your D50 then you should already know what to get next. My 12yo son has a D50 and I like the fact that it's very light. The two things I don't like about it are the low maximum ISO limit and the lack of zoom during preview mode. If I were to upgrade a D50, I'd go for a D90. That's because like you my wallet is also very limiting.

Well I'd have to disagree with the above comments, I'm going to say the D700. The most important thing for somebody in the position that you're in is to start shooting full frame and using full frame (FX) lenses. You will notice a huge sudden change in the quality of the images you are producing. You will still be able to use your old DX lenses with the full frame D700 and still get (let me stress this point) the most you possibly can out of those lenses but you will be able to get far better results with FX lenses.
I know this might be a bit out of your budget but due to the recent release of the Nikon D4 almost all products are going to drop drastically in price right about now and also in the near future so just keep your eyes out for a good deal. You can also find nearly brand new cameras with an extended warrantee from a reputable dealer for a fraction of the price of a new one (and barely any difference). It's really just a matter of knowing what you're looking for and shopping around for the right price (and possibly being a bit patient and waiting for everybody to upgrade due to D4 release) trust me, you'll find one cheap soon.

If you have a collection of Nikkor AF lenses then upgrade to the D7000. Its the replacement for the 3 year old D90 and, like your D50, has a focusing motor in the camera body so Nikkor AF lenses will auto focus on it. The D7000 body only is available at B&H for $1, 299.00 with free USA shipping.

You should mention your budget if any. I started with a D50 as well. Have the D90 now and highly recommend it. FYI. Keep the D50 for a back up, I did.still a great camera.
