I hope the purchase included a 18-55 mm lens. That lens will allow you to shoot landscapes, group shots, full body shots as well as head and shoulder portraits.

What lens you buy next has more to do with what subjects you want to shoot.

Amazing landscapes? A nice 10-24 mm

Sports, action and wildlife? A 55-300 mm will get you started.

Nikon's 18-55 VR, which is usually bundled with the D3000 is a fine lens to get started with. Work with that and after a few weeks or months try to determine what it's not doing for you. Come back with that and a budget and you will get valuable advice.

Any novice I always advice this:
- memory card
- card reader
- protective bag of some sort
- rocket blower
- microfiber cloth
- photography for beginners book.

What do you want to shoot? Far away stuff like animals, sports, or landscape, or macro, or a lens for many things?

I may suggest the new AFS 50MM F1.8. For portrait and low light.
