Which lense for my Nikon D90?

Ana
Ana

I just bought a Nikon D90 and I'm still really confused what lense I should get.

I'm going to be using the camera to take pictures from trips and family, so basically it will be as a hobby. I will be taking a 9-week photography course at the soon, and I want to get a good quality lense.

I've been reading a lot and it has come down to the Nikkor 18-200mm. However, I'm not really sure if that's the best one.

Also, I got even more confused because there are two different ones on Amazon and I can't tell the difference.

1) Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S ED VR II Nikkor Telephoto Zoom Lens for Nikon DX-Format Digital SLR Cameras
2) Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED-IF AF-S VR DX Zoom-Nikkor Lens

Most likely, I will be buying the lense on ebay.

Please feel free to give any suggestions.

Added (1). By the way, I only bought the body and I currently have no lenses.

What lenses do you have already?

Personally, if you've the 18-105mm already, I'd also grab a Nikon AF-S 70-300mm f/4-5.6 VR. If you bought just the body only, I'd grab the AF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 ED VR lens.

As for the difference between 1 and 2, 1 is an ED lens whereas 2 is a non-ED lens. ED is Extra-low Dispersion, which means the glass is optically superior and is less susceptible to chromatic abberations.

If you only want one lens to do everything then get either. I'm guessing VRII is more expensive than VR hence better. If you want more zoom, Tamron has an 18-250mm.

If your main concern is overall picture quality, get a non-zooming lens. Most beginners are advised to start with a 50mm f/1.8. If you already know what you're doing, you would know exactly the lens you need.

The first lens is the newer version that's meant to replace the older, second lens below. It's optically identical (meaning exact same quality) as the older lens. The only difference lies in the cosmetics. The new version has gold lettering for the VR label on the lens, while the old version uses red. The new version also has what is known as a "zoom lock", which is a lock that prevent your focal length from changing when at 18mm.

I wouldn't worry too much about the differences. I'd get the older version if I can find a better deal on one.
