Nearly ever Nikon lens made since 1959 will fit the D90 and work as intended

yes there are a lot of lenses, each with specific uses. You need to choose one that suits the photography that you want to do.

if you do not have any lens at the moment, look at the 18-200mm lens or 28-300mm lens. Both of them are wide angle- telephoto lenses that cover the most important ranges, but don't excel in any one area.

Nikon's 18-105. Affordable, pretty good and it can cover 95% of what most people shoot

It can depend on what you are willing to spend, and how much weight and bulk you can tolerate.
The 18-105mm VR kit lens is reputed to be a good one. The 18-200mm has nice versatility, but image quality is a bit uneven through the range. If you have just the body, you might consider starting with the 16-85mm VR, which is a little better optically and better built, but it is more expensive. The 55-200mm VR is a good, lightweight, cost effective telephoto. The 55-300mm VR has a bit more range, but edge sharpness deteriorates at the end of it. The heftier AF-S 70-300mm VR is reputed to be a better lens. (Avoid the cheap 70-300mm.) If you are really serious about sports photography, you could go for the 70-200mm VR f2.8.

I just bought the nikon nikkor 35mm f1.8G it is great for every kind of photography and works great in low light so you don't need a flash.
On the d90 it is a 52mm because of the 1.5 crop factor witch i love it is perfect for portraits and wedding/party photography i have also used it for close ups of insects and flowers and it is only about $200.
A must have lens for all photographers.

More than 60 Nikon lenses will work and auto focus with your DSLR. It all depends on what kind you want and your budget.

D90's comment is not quite correct.

Although the D90 has a crop factor of 1.5x, and a 35mm lens would have an effective focal length of 52mm, it still retains the characteristics of the 35mm lens - namely perspective distortion.

While the perspective distortion is not huge at 35mm, it still exists. Wide angle lenses - those with perspective distortion are not good portrait lenses as they tend to make people's noses look big and their faces look round; not very good features for a portrait.
