I have a digital Canon Rebel and it does a remarkable job for me. I bought Canon again because I paid and arm and a leg for a 35 milimeter EOS650 years ago and still had the EF lenses which can be used on the digital camera now. I don't know if you are comparing apples to oranges but if I had more bucks and really needed a professional level camera then I would buy the next step up in the Canon. I have found that the Rebel does just fine for me and have put my extra $ into the zoom lens. No matter what you buy, you always want to get those close up shots and lenses are expensive. And don't forget to immediately put a filter over your lens to protect it from any damage and keep your camera and equipment clean and dry. SLR is the way to go.

They're both more or less the same. In all honesty, you can't go wrong with either camera. You're better off simply choosing the one that feels more comfortable in your hand because that's the only big difference between the two cameras.

As you can already see you're going to get more conflicting views. I own an XS and I agree, it's doing a great job for me… I won't buy Nikon - but hey, that's just me.

Which is Better? Coke? Or Pepsi?

Cameras are tools. Tools can only be "better" than one another if they fulfill a specific purpose more effectively than the other. Without specifying a purpose, neither of these cameras can be "better" than the other.

The Nikon is better if you want to use vintage or modern Nikkor lenses.

The Canon is better if you want to use modern modern Canon lenses.

The Nikon is better built in some peoples' opinion an feels nicer in your hand.

The Canon's ISO and WB controls are more accessible than the Nikon.

There are probably myriad other differences that I don't know about but you have to identify what YOU want in your camera and decide for yourself which one has more features that will help you do things the way that makes sense to you. Once you have decided what particular items you prefer about each camera, list them and ask about those differences. Then you'll get an educated answer.

Also decide which camera can accept lenses you'll want to use. Base this on features and price. Nikon doesn't make as many budget lenses as Canon to my knowledge. Both make surperb expensive lenses though. Choosing one camera brand over another forces you to also choose what lenses you will use.

Right now you're going to get useless answers like the first reply about shooting commercials. If you don't shoot commercials who cares if one of the cameras did this? Commercials are not the apex of quality anyway.

All that aside, the Leica MP is a "better" camera than both these piles of plastic mass produced tinker toy garbage. But that's probably not the camera you want.

Both are good camera to get. If you want Live View Function that allow you to view subject direct on LCD monitor Canon Rebel XS is your choice. But if you don't mind that I would recommend Nikon D3000 which more 11 point auto focus provide good sharp images.

The D3000 has no AF motor, so not all lenses will auto focus and it has no Live View. However, it has 2 more AF points and max ISO 3200 vs 1600.

Image Quality is the same.
