Most all DSLRs can be setup to different color saturation and sharpness palettes when they output JPGs.

In fact, if you look at a RAW file, it does not have any of these attributes, and often looks kind of bland vs. The JPG when it comes out of the camera (which is why you have to photoshop it to render your desired sharpness and saturation).

While I'm a Nikon guy and have a D90, I have to say that the difference you see is probably how these settings are configured in one camera vs, the other.

Borrow your friend's D90 and shoot the same picture using both cameras with the same settings. If you think one is better than the other despite using exactly the same settings on the camera and lens, then you know where to go to. If you still can't decide, then it's perfectly normal. The camera is only a tool. Picture quality depends more on the ability of the photographer.

If you can't get good photos with your current camera, a new one won't help.
