Where do you find aperture setting? Nikon D40?
Put the camera into aperture priority mode, "A" on the big top dial. Then you can change the aperture using the thumb dial.
You can also use full manual mode, M on the top dial. Then you can change the aperture when you hold the exposure compensation button while turning the thumb dial.
Right where the instructions that came with your camera says… Time to read them. If you don't have the instructions, download them from the nikon website.

Either by going to the "A" setting on the top dial, or if you're in manual mode then hold the +/- button that's below the shutter release button while spinning the dial.
