The most preferred method to cleaning the lens is to use a Micro Fiber Cloth which typically can be found at many Camera Stores long with Lens Cleaning Kits.

Lens pens work really well for cleaning a Nikon. Here is a complete kit for Nikon cameras that includes a lens pens. The cleaning cloth in this kit isn't for the lenses, but for the camera.
