What size should I resize my pictures so that the quality will stay the same for facebook?
I shot pictures with a Nikon D60 at 2896x 1944 and whenever I upload them too facebook or tumblr even down sizing them to 1000, the quality is ruined. I'm using photoshop. Anyone know what size to resize them at or if i should use another program?
Around 700 is pretty good
Make them smaller yourself using Photoshop instead of uploading huge a** pictures and having them resize it for you. Resize them to around 800 x 600 (just for normalcy sake). You can go higher or smaller, but if it's too big, the viewer's screen will be overwhelmed and some might have to scroll, OR the host site will resize it for you and you never want that. Then re-save it (don't overwrite your original unless you don't care about losing it).
Also, when you save them don't just use "save" or "save as"… Use "save for web devices… " and switch to the 4-up view. THEN mess around with different formats (gif, jpg, png) at different levels of quality (if available) and choose the one that looks best at the smallest file size (Kb-wise). Each "preview window" can be set to a different format and/or setting, so you can compare 3 different ones to the original one in one location all before actually saving them. It's one of the best features of Ps that we sometimes take for granted.lol
You can set the pixels of your camera if you really want to keep the quality of the shots. But when it comes to uploading them try 525 x 655.
My son uses some of my pictures for his Facebook pages; these are RAW images taken at 2896 x 4296 @300 dpi which I then resize to 1280 x 860 pixels @ 72 dpi which are saved as JPEG format and he finds these work okay for his needs.
