What's the difference between Vibration Reduction and Non-Vibration Reduction?
On Nikkor lenses for Nikon D3000
Vibration Reduction is a system in Nikon lense which help to remove camera shake and movement from appearing in pictures.
When hand holding a camera the lower the shutter speed used the more likely camera shake will blur the picture. Vibration Reduction systems move elements within the lens to compensate for that hand movement resulting in a sharper picture when using slower shutter speeds.
As a rule of thumb the slowest shutter speed that can be hand held without camera shake affecting the picture is equivilent to the focal length being used. So 1/50th second is the slowest speed that could be used with a 50mm lens. The vibration reduction system means that a speed slower than 1/50th second could be used (approximatly 1/20th second) before camera shake will again blur the image.
