What other name brand lenses can I use on my Nikon D3200?

Just purchased a D3200 but have lenses from my Minolta Maxum D5. Any thoughts on adapters or should I just bite the bullet and purchase new?

The best third party for Nikon's are those made by Tokina

There are a lot of used Nikkor AF-S lenses out there, so you may want to check craigslist in your nearest city

After Tokina, Sigma and Tamron

Third party lenses include Tamron, Sigma and Tokina. They all make relatively good lenses also if you don't mind using a used lens, you can get a used Nikon lens for a pretty good price. Just go down to any store in your area that sells used camera/lens and they should have it. But beware when getting used items. Always check the the lens elements to see if there are any fungus or scratches.

As for the adaptor enquiry, I would suggest not to get an adapter even if there's one because the lens might not focus or work properly on the camera.

Adapters never work. At least never work properly. At best, they will reduce your ability to focus to infinity, and at worst, they degrade the optical quality.

Tokina is the best 3rd party lens maker. But realize that 80% of them require cameras with in-body focus motors for autofocus to work. Since you do not have one in the D3200, most Tokinas will not autofocus (but you can still manually focus them).

The Tokinas that will autofocus have a DXII suffix (DX2), and those do have in-body focus motors. But the only lenses that I know of that have that feature are the 11-16mm DX2 and 12-24mm DX2. Both are outstanding super-wide angle lenses. However, if you are considering one of those, make sure you buy the DX2 version as Tokina makes both DX2 and DX (without the focus motor).

Sigma would be next. Some Sigma lenses are OK, And there has been a lot of criticism with Sigma about their quality control, so make sure you get what you are expecting.

I would not own a Tamron. They are in 3rd place as aftermarket in my view, and there are enough offerings between Nikon, Tokina, and Sigma that there's no need to go further.

And stay away from the others; The low cost lenses with odd-ball sounding names. Junk, junk, junk.
