Is the AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D compatible? Which other lenses that are cheap but have a wide f stop are compatible without an adapter?

Added (1). Also- would this lens work: nikkor 35-70mm f/2.8

it is currently on my nikon fm1-10 which is an SLR, will i need an adapter?

Pretty much all Nikon F bayonet lenses will fit and work, with varying degrees of functionality, however.

the D lenses, such as the one you mentioned will work, but you will not have autofocus. For autofocus, you will need AF-S or AF-I lenses.

Yes it is compatible in the sense that it will fit (all Nikon lenses made since about 1959 will fit your camera), but some may not meter and unless they are marked AF-S they will not autofocus.

The above will meter, but will not autofocus on your D5100, so you would have to focus it manually (not difficult, one you get the knack - its how film photographers had to work!).

That is the cheapest lens that Nikon make, that is a good quality prime, with a wide aperture. There's an AF-S version that will autofocus on your camera, but it's much more expensive.

Yes it is. The AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D does not have an autofocus sensor, meaning you will have to use manual focus.

You'll probably want the AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G.

You also might want to consider the AF-S Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G

The Nikon AF 50mm f1.8D is fully compatible with your Nikon D5100 except it won't auto focus. If you want an auto focus 50mm lens then you'll have to buy the more expensive AF-S 50mm f1.8G lens.

Nikon managed to keep the price of the D5100 down by not including a focusing motor in the camera body but then they get more of your money by forcing you to use the more expensive AF-S lenses if you want auto focus.
