What kind of camera is good for beginners?

I'm looking to get into photography a little bit and have a good camera like a Nikon D60 for when I travel. I was wondering what kind of camera would be best and most user-friendly? I hear the Nikon D60 is good but I don't know much about cameras and was wanting some suggestions.

The D60 is a good beginner camera, though as mentioned, it has been replaced by the D3100. Canon's 1100D(T3) and 600D(T3i) are also good choices.

I think the nikon D3100 is one of the better suited cameras for newbies.
