What is the canon equivalent of a nikon D3100?
That would be the 1100D or T3 (not to be confused with the T3i), depending on whether you live in Europe or America respectively. Different names for the same camera.
Either the 1100D, as mentioned, or the 500D
the D3100 is kinda in between those two models
In terms of performance, the 550D is in fact the real counterpart to the D3100.

You can see the specs are almost identical. Both the 500D and 1100D are slightly worse performers against the D3100, albeit still very good entry level DSLR's.
Nikon D3100 is able to record Full HD movie 1080p at 24 fps, it records more detail than Canon 1100D
Canon EOS 1100D and Nikon D3100 are both the interchangeable lens digital cameras. Many of their features are similar. For example, the 1100D and the D3100 both feature the feature guide system
Honestly speaking. For learning purposes, i'll go with the Canon 1100D. Sure, the Nikon D3100 has better specs but it lacks of some 'learning' features such as bracketing.
