What is a shoe cover used for on a camera?

I have a Nikon d3000 and i was looking through the manual and some reviews online abd i saw where it said a "shoe cover" and i was wondering what is that used for and also if its needed for my camera/flash to work. I also saw something about rusting. Will you help me understand what its used for?

The hot shoe is the mount on top of the camera where you can attach various accessories, usually flashes

a hot shoe cover is just something that slides in there to protect the contacts from dirt, water, grime, etc.

It's nothing more than a fitted rubber shield that goes over the external flash hot shoe. It's not needed for normal use, but depending on the conditions in which you store and use your camera, might prevent corrosion of the contacts on the hot shoe. If you only use the built in flash or keep your camera dry and safe from moisture, no need for it. I personally keep a can of electrical contact spray for situations when any devices, including cameras, get wet or greasy on their dials or connections, and rely on it.

The external flash connector at the top of the hump of your dSLR is called a shoe. The shoe need not be covered. The shoe cover is not needed for the shoe or flash to function. You and your camera may do without it.

There's a hotshoe on top of the camera where you can attach an external flash, or a trigger for off camera flashes. It has the electrical contacts for the flash.

I lost the hotshoe cover shortly after I unboxed my D300 & never miss it. I also use a film camera that's 30+ years old which has never had a hotshoe cover either. It's the most unnecessary 'accessory' I can think of.

The hotshoe contacts will not rust, unless you plonk the camera in salt water - in which case rusty hotshoe contacts will be the least of your worries.
