Ok so my girlfriend loves photography and she has a Nikon D3000 camera and she said she really wants a tripod. Is there anything i need to know about the camera before i just go out and by a tripod? Will any tripod work?

Any tripod will basically work to hold her camera, but there are differences in height, weight, material from which it's made, (steel, aluminum, carbon fiber, etc), size and how many "joints" in each leg. That is, a tripod with four joints will collapse to a smaller form than on with three. Her camera is pretty light and small so you'll have a lot of choice, and I don't see any advantage in getting something real expensive. I'd see what's on craig's list first, but be sure it's in good, rigid shape. I like the kind that have a hook on the bottom of the center column so you can suspend your camera bag or another weight to increase stability.

SORT of!
I started with a $30 tripod at first, it's SUCH a pain to adjust though, so I just wouldn't use it half the time and my pictures turned out blurry.
I knew I wanted a pistol grip tripod (they are AMAZING!) because you can swivel your camera around So easily an lock it in place in nearly any position, but again… I'm cheap, so I got the cheapest Manfrotto pistol grip available. It's not MADE for DSLR's, but it worked for my cheap light Olympus
It works great, but I'm about to upgrade to a new camera that is considerably better, and I'm afraid it will be a bit heavy for the tripod. I wouldn't want it to fall over and break the new camera:-P
Basically, if I would have just bought a NICE tripod to begin with, then I would have saved some money, and only have 1 instead of 3, 2 of which that I can't really use.

So yeah, things to look for:
Pistol Grip (she'll LOVE you for it!)
Sturdiness (also very important.
