What cameras are similar to the Nikon D5000?

I'm looking in to purchasing an advanced camera and a friend of mine has the Nikon D5000. I'm open in looking into that camera or any similar styles. If you have any suggestions or advice, I would gladly appreciate it.

There's only one other maker who comes close, Nikon's closest competitor is Canon. I'm a Canon owner and enjoy both of my dslr cameras. The Rebel line is a fine group of cameras ranging from
$500 to about $950. All but one of the most recent offerings do video - the Rebel XS. I own one and it's an excellent still camera.

Canon's line starting with the T1i and newer. Don't go for the XS or XSi. The ISO is very limited on them as opposed to the newer cameras.
First choice would be the T3i (600D)(skip the T3 too, no video), then the T2i (550D), then the T1i (500D)

My D5100 just arrived and i'm extremely happy with the camera. The grip feels great, the quality of the photos is awsome, and it has excellent low ISO features. I highly recommend this camera. I've only had the D5100 for a few days, and I love it.d5100 is newest model of d5000.
