Cameras similar to the Canon 60d and th Nikon D5000?
I'm looking for a camera around 500 dollars that takes amazing HD video like the D5000 and the Canon models but also takes good photos.
You won't be able to find one that record video for $500. However, if you expand your budget to about $600, then you have a few different options like the Canon Rebel T3, Nikon D3100, and Pentax K-r.
If your budget is already set in stone though, you may be better off with a camcorder especially if video is your main priority.
The Nikon equivilant to the Canon 60D is the D7000, NOT the D5000
For $500 you can't find a dSLR with a video feature.
You will have to spend at least $700 for a Nikon D3100 or Canon 500D/T1i
Of the two, both can shoot HD video (720p), but only the D3100 can shoot Full HD (1080p) at any real fps rate. The 500D shoot Full HD video at 20 fps, something that is slower than even the cine rate of 24 fps
Okay great HD video and good pictures for under $500. While it may seem impossible, there actually is something that does meet your requirements. It is the Panasonic GH1. The video quality is excellent and the stills are of good quality ( but not equal to the Canon or Nikon mentioned). Here is a review

Hope this helps

The Canon T2i/T3i would be the best bet by far. The 60D is a better camera in general (though they both use the same sensor) but is a little more expensive. Canon does sell refurbished cameras for a discounted price:
