You did not specify the manufacturer to work, but almost any lens made in the last 50 years for the Nikon F-Mount will work. However, depending on the lens age and features, some of the functions may not be available.

For autofocus to work, you need an AF-S lens.AF lenses can work if you manually focus them, and older lenses will work if you put the camera into manual exposure mode.

But there are a few incompatibilities with really old lenses, so check your manual for those exceptions.

All the Lenses with AF-S designation will work with your Nikon D40

Anything Nikon AF-S or Sigma HSM or Tamron build-in-motor will do.

A nikon 18-55 can be found cheap. A real bargain is nikon's old 18-135. Impressive lens but going cheap because it lacks VR.

The 18-55mm is a great kit lens and can be found for pretty cheap. You can find a 50mm f/1.8 lens for around 100 bucks (less if you are patient for it).

A ton of lenses are compatible with the D40… It's just what you're willing to give up in order to use them.

-You're going to need an AF-S or AF-I lenses in order to auto focus.

-AF and AF-D lenses will work on the D40 if you manually focus

-AI and AIs lenses will mount on the D40, but you have to use manual mode because they will not meter nor will they auto focus.

-Pre-AI and AI converted lenses will also mount on the D40 but it won't meter nor auto focus.

-The old fisheyes will not mount on the D40 and will break the mirror.

Of course, this is all in terms of Nikon lenses. Other brands have different designations for their style of lenses.

You can get any AF-S or AF-D lens for autofocus compatibility.

Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED IF AF-S VR Nikkor Zoom Lens still has some "handling" issues that stem from its nature as a consumer-oriented lens, and it is still a "slow" lens, with a maximum aperture of f/4.5 - f/5.6 - although f/5.6 at 300mm still implies a light-transmissive opening of about 54mm, nearly as large as that of an 85mm f/1.4 (61mm). There's simply no way the lens could be faster without also making it larger, heavier and much more expensive - and such lenses already exist.
