Nikon SLR Cameras

What camera is most like the Nikon D3100 but not a DSLR?

I really love everything about the nikon D3100 except for the fact that it has interchangeable lenses. I know that more professional photographers like the interchangeable lenses, but i'm "not ready" to get a camera that doesn't have a built in zoom for very far away objects. Is there any cameras that are similar to the D3100 in picture quality, depth of field, video capabilities, etc, but not interchangeable lenses?

Nope. The picture quality and controllable depth if field on the D3100 comes from the large image sensor. Non-DSLR cameras have tiny sensors by comparison, which severely limits their results compared to DSLR cameras.

Well, Sony used to make a camera called the Sony R1. You can still buy it used on eBay for a good price. It has a fantastic lens worth far more than the price you'll pay for the camera, BUT it is not nearly as responsive as the D3100. Those who can live with the R1's limitations love the camera for it's lens.

You could just buy a D3100 body and put Nikon's 18-200mm zoom lens on it and leave it on all the time. That's a 11x zoom…

[I have a feeling that if you did this you would eventually get curious enough to try another lens, and maybe then another lens. It's not that hard to carry a few lenses and swap them.]
