I've heard that the Nikon d3100 is good. What would you guys suggest as good brands/ specific models? I just want a nice camera that will last a long time and I know a lot of people with DSLR's that absolutely love them.

The Nikon D3100 is an excellent choice. It costs less than $700.

The next step up would be the Nikon D5100 and it costs less than $900

If you have alot of friends that shoot DSLRS you should buy into the same system as them. It'll allow you to share and try out various lenses, flashes etc.

If your looking at an entry level DSLR than you want to consider whether you want to take still images or video or both. If you want to do both and want something simple I would highly recommend the Sony Alpha A33, it takes excellent photos and has continous autofocus like a camcorder, plus you get an external microphone input so you don't get the noise from the AF motor. For film quality I'd say the Canon EOS 550d or 600d as these are both very good for video performance and image quality. For Photos you can't really go wrong with most the Canon EOS 1100d is good if your on a tight budget about the same price as the Nikon D3100. The Pentax KX and KR are also very good and have a video mode and take great stills. You should also consider a Mirrorless camera like a Panasonic GF2 or G10 or the Olympus PEN series.

For low price DSLR, I don't think NIKON is good, because there are no motor with body, you have to buy the lens with motor, all of this lens are expensive.
You can buy a sony A 65 or SONY A350.

Nikon D3100 is an amazing deal! Unless you make most of your income from photography or have a stockpile of old lenses (this camera can only autofocus with AFS lenses) then this camera is the must have camera of the year.

What's not too pricey? That doesn't help at all.

The D3100 is one of the best beginner models out there, so go get it and take some pictures. All DSLRs have same image quality really, it just depends on how you use them.
