What camera? Getting into photography?

I'm interested in the Nikon D3100, but how does it compare to other cameras? I'm interested in using it for a lot of photography (I'm an aspiring photographer) and eventually (after getting proper lenses) for Macro photography. I'm also very interested in the 1080p HD video it has to offer. Recently I broke my camera and i need a good camera for a variety of scenarios. I would like a camera with 12+mp and under $700. I will eventually purchase more lenses to expand the range of use.

It's the best price/performance model out right now, go get it.
You need 12+MP? You do realize megapixels have nothing to do with sharpness, quality… Your monitor is probably lower than 1920 x 1080, which is 2 megapixels. That's the maximum your monitor can show, no matter what. Same for other devices. The only reason why you'd need more is because you print LARGE or crop a lot.
