What are some techniques I could use to take Jacob Riis-style photos?

Marc
I'm having trouble with a photography project. The equipment I have available is a Nikon d60 with a DX Nikkor 18-55mm lens, an AF Nikkor 70-300mm lens, a tripod, and a grey card.

As far as I can tell, Jacob Riis was a social documentary photographer. Surely all you need to do is go out & do some street photography?
The 70-300mm lesn would be best for that. You don't need anything else. Shoot in colour & convert to B&W in post for best results
