Just got this camera- I love it but I can't figure out to be able to view what I'm going to take a picture. I have to look thru the window to take a pic. IS there a setting so I can use the viewfinder?

No they can't see how many times you veiw it Ok, … A few things.

First, you NEED to use the VIEWFINDER to compose and take photos. This is a DSLR. It is not intended to be used like a phone or little point and shoot camera with the monitor. You use the viewfinder so you can easily see and compose in bright conditions and also to help steady the camera against your face to help avoid blur due to camera movement.

Second, that is an older camera model. What you are wanting to do is possible with newer DSLR cameras. It is called LIVE VIEW. Using that mode allows the monitor to be used to take photos… But… It is still NOT the preferred or proper way to use a DSLR. Live View mode is there primarily for shooting on a tripod and / or for macro photography.

Your camera does NOT allow Live View usage. You can ONLY use the viewfinder to take photos, … And this is how it is SUPPOSED to be. If you find that impossible, you need to get rid of the camera and go back to using a far lower quality point and shoot. SteveP is correct.

Attempting to hold a nearly 2 pound camera and lens at arm's length is going to introduce camera movement which will cause your images to be blurred.

For stability, you NEED to learn how to use the camera as it and all other SLR and digital SLR cameras were designed. Look on page 27 of your user manual The technique with the older DSLRs - pre-live view when the D90 came in - is to compose the shot in the glass viewfinder, adjust the settings, take the shot, review the shot afterwards in the LCD panel, make subtle settings changes so that the other shots will be good for the lighting situation. The D3000 does not have LiveView. Use the viewfinder to compose your shot. Yes The D3000 doesn't have that feature. It doesn't have live view, you have to look through the view finder to take your picture.
