Using Nikon D5000 off camera Flash?

Pixie

I have recently purchased a Nikon d5000 and a SB-800 speed light for my camera. Now that I have become more experimental with light id like to purchase a second flash to use as a wireless flash. I'm looking at buying a SB-600 and using it as the slave, but i'm unsure about the following things.

1)Am i able to use the SB800 as the master and the SB600 as the slave or do i need to purchase another SB800 to use as the slave?

2)I understand the D5000 does not have a wireless flash function, what kind of triggers do i need to buy?

3)Is there any kind of triggers that allow my SB800 to sit on top of my camera and allow the slave flash to stand alone separate.

1. An 800 can act as master for a 600.
2.none, your 800 can handle that.
3. That functionality is built into the sb800.

Yes you can use the SB800 as a master flash and the SB600 as a slave. The SB800 can only be used as a Master ON CAMERA.

If you want wireless triggers, I recommend the RF602's by Yongnuo (about £45 for one transmitter & 2 receivers). You won't have TTL function though - you'll have to have the flashes in 'manual' (not remote) and adjust the power output manually (it's adjustable in 1/3 stops down to 1/64 on the SB600 and 1/128 on the SB800)

You'd have the SB800 on the camera in 'Master' mode and the SB600 can be triggered remotely using that (have the SB600 in 'remote' mode).

If you want to use a wireless flash off camera and have TTL flash metering, you'll need to stick with the Nikon CLS system (ie use the SB800 as master, and get an SB600 as a remote).

If you go down the radio trigger route (where you can't use TTL anyway), you don't need to buy Nikon flashes - a good manual flash will do. For example, the YN560 which is only £60 or so & has the specs of a SB800.

I started off with all Nikon flashes but have found the radio trigger (& cheaper flashes) to be the way to go.
