How to use the remote off camera flash with my SB-700 on my Nikon d5000?
So i'm a beginner in flash photography, I have the Nikon SB-700 flash and I can use it perfectly mounted on the camera, but I can't figure out how to use it as an off camera remote flash, so it's not mounted on the camera. I see the remote flash settings in the menu of the camera and flash, but I can't seem to sync the two to work together.
Not sure if your D5000 has Nikon's wireless flash (CLS) capability.
If it has, you should see 'flash cntrl for built in flash' > commander mode in the flash menu. Set teh SB700 to wireless remote mode You then control the flash output (TTL or flash power) via the camera's commander mode (you need the pop-up flash up to act as as trigger).
If not, then your best bet is to get a set of radio triggers. I use RF602's - about £20 a set. In this case, you need to operate your camera in manual exposure mode (M) and have the flash in manual mode also (NOT wireless remote mode). The radio transmitter sits on the hotshoe, so the pop-up flash is kept down. You set the flash power output on the flash itself, manually.
