Using an intervalometer with a Nikon D7000?

I was looking into getting one of these so that I can do timed exposures of stars, at night

I've tried and failed to get my head round the d7000's own interval timer, and can't get it to do 30 seconds exposures with a 1 second gap.

Does anybody know if an intervalometer also allows a longer shutter speed, say 4 minutes or more.

You do know don't you that a 30 second exposure is going to show movement of the earth or star streaks.

You may want to try a different approach.

Unless you are shooting in an area with little or no light pollution (like on the top of a mountain at least 100 miles from the nearest settlement) and shooting in cold air, your exposures are going to be long enough for the stars to show up on your sensor.

Talk to a professor at your local university or community college that teaches astronomy and have them talk to you about shooting stars at night using an intervalometer.

I guess you can do some tests, but my guess is you don't want to spend a whole night on the top of a mountain doing tests.
