I'm planning to buy a used DSLR camera. Is Nikon D40 a good option? What are the other options available?

It depends on what you're using it for, what options you want, and how much you want to spend.

I got a used Canon 40D on eBay and I love it. The important thing to remember is, after buying the camera body, you're also going to need lenses, and they can be expensive. The more you pay, the better quality of the pictures you'll get (lens-wise). The body doesn't matter nearly as much as the glass you put on the front.

The Nikon D40 is still a good option and it will not empty your wallet too much

I have a colleague who still uses a Nikon D40 when shooting cross court at NBA basketball games. He has it attached to a 300 mm f/2.8 lens. Yes, he also uses a couple of Nikon D3s bodies for shooting at his end of the court, but the quality of the D40 is good enough to shoot images used in various sports publications and that is pretty good.

Yes, I know that the lens costs over 10 times what his little D40 costs, but it is a good combination for his purposes.

I'm always worried about used gear for many reasons. How's the camera been treated? Has it been roughed or beaten up? How have the lenses been treated? Have they been cleaned regularly?
Stored in a case or bag all the time? Wet? What's the shutter count?

That's why I always buy new - never used, and I know exactly what I'm getting. So many horror stories about used gear.

But if you must, know that you're risking problems.
