Traveling to Rome with Nikon D3100 - what type of wide angle lens should I take?

I have a standard DX 18-55mm and a 55-200mm lens for my 35mm camera. I would like to rent or purchase a wide angle lens for taking pictures inside cathedrals or other historical buildings. I like how the wide angle will make objects close up seem gigantic and objects at a distance look unusually small. Looking for suggestions to get this affect.

You'd be surprised how much the 18-55mm will let you away with.

I would suggest the Nikkor AF-S 10-24 mm

What 35 mm camera do you have? All my DX lenses show vignetting when I attach them to my 35 mm cameras.

The D3100 uses a cropped sensor, so all your DX lenses work perfectly fine with it, but as I say, any full frame camera like a 35 mm will show vignetting.

NOTE: The full frame Nikon digital SLR's automatically crop the sensor when using DX lenses.

The Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 is your best bet. For inside use the fast f/2.8 is great for low-light photos.

If you buy or rent one, make sure you buy the Dx II (DX2) version as that is the only version that will autofocus on your camera.

The Nikon 10-24 as already suggested or the Tokina 11-16 f2.8 in Nikon mount.
Don't worry that this is a Sony/Minolta site… They rate 3rd party lenses too.

Note it is possible to stitch photos from the kit lens together but you must lock the exposure and keep the camera level. If only they would allow tripods in busy places!
