The 35mm/1, 8 is a good lens, but not really suitable for either of the purposes that you mentioned. It's too wide for most landscape shots and too short for portraits.

For portraits, consider 50mm prime lenses (50mm/1.8 AF-S… Watch out, there also is an AF version that won't autofocus on your camera) or a 60mm macro lens. The latter also can be used for macro photography of course.

For landscape photos, consider the Nikon 10-24mm, Tokina 11-16mm/2.8, Sigma 10-20mm/4.5-5.6 or Sigma 8-16mm.
These all are ultra wide angle lenses.

For portrait the AF-S Micro-Nikkor 60mm f/2.8 should be good, and it doubles as your macro lens. Contrary to many people's gushing about the 50mm f1.8 or f1.4 for portraits, even with a crop factor of 1.5 turning 50mm into the equivalent of 75mm, 75mm is only almost long enough to be good for portraits. The eyeball-and-nothing-else-in-focus look of f1.8 will also get tiresome.
