Tips for photography meteor shower? Nikon d40?
I have I nikon d40 and the kit lens. I also have a telephoto lens, but I've read that wider angles are better. I have a tripod I can use too, so what do I need to do to photograph the meteor shower? I don't know about the shutter speed I'll need and what not.
Set it to a long shutter speed so you can capture meteor trails.
Try manual mode at around f/4 or f/5.6, ISO 200-400 with a longer exposure also get away from city lights or well lit areas go to a dark, high vantage point and aim the camera just off the point of origin for a better effect. And try a 20mm focal length as i think its the normal eye see perspective but its really up to how you like it.
ISO around 100-200
Aperture as small as you can get it - meteor trails are thin & poorly lit - the wider the aperture the better you'll see them.
Shoot at the widest focal length you can to get as much of the sky in as possible (18mm). Focus manually on infinity to save the autofocus having to 'hunt' for each shot.
Might be best to take 30 secs exposures (several, for a period of an hour or so) and stack them, that will prevent the sensor warming up & getting long exposure noise. Will also avoid the sky getting too light.
Stack them using this;
