Thinking of getting a Nikon D90? - 1

Right now i have a Pentax k-x it was a good cheap starter camera but now i need to be getting serious about my career etc. I'm majoring in photojournalism. I originally was going to go with the D5000 but for only a couple hundred dollars more i think i'm going to go with the D90 cause i don't want to have to upgrade later or atleast not as fast as if i was getting the D5000.thoughts?! Reviews?!

The D90 was a good camera in it's time, the D90, I'm not going to knock the D90, but it has been, if not replaced, re-marketed by the D300s.

But technology moves on particularly sensor technology and the Pentax Kr would be more up to date than either, not as good as the K5, but that's quite a leap not just a step both in price and performance, low light high ISO performance is second to none and that includes cameras with full frame sensors.

Here they all are side by side with reviews

Notice the K5 is the only one with a gold star award.

The K5 does have one Achilles heel, video is very much an afterthought with no re-focusing or aperture adjustment during filming movies, though the movies themselves are very good with no picture tearing during panning shots (always a good indicator of video quality).

The K5 is in a different league to your Kx, the low noise high ISO performance is so good it has changed the way I shoot, now low priced small aperture zooms can perform as well and give shutter speeds faster than wide aperture lenses in low light. Indoor sports and other badly lit fast action shots are possible with small aperture lenses, shooting at 1600 ISO has no visible noise even if you 'pixel peep', that the equivalent to a 4 stop increase in aperture.

I'm super happy with my d90. All the manual controls are right at your finger tips, I think the pictures are great quality. I bought my d90 with the 50mm f/1.8 lens, amazing lens. Here are my first pics with my d90, no photoshop~

Most recent with photoshop~

I plan on upgrading to the d700, someday!

Save and get the Nikon D7000. Newer technology (iso performance, smarter AF points, larger sensor, etc.) and a much more durable build.
Although if you're going to invest in the d5000 might as well save and go for the d5100.
